Long ago, in the high valleys of Tibet, there lived a man known to everyone as Aku Tonpa — Uncle Tonpa, the clever one. He wandered from village to village, always with a smile, always with a trick up his sleeve. People said his wisdom could untangle any knot and his humor could melt the coldest mountain wind.
One autumn morning, Aku Tonpa was walking along a rocky mountain road when he met a fox sitting in the middle of the path. The fox had bright amber eyes and a bushy tail that swept the dust like a broom.
"Good morning, old man," said the fox, blocking the path with a grin. "I know every secret of this valley. The hiding place of every marmot, every shortcut through the mountains, every weakness of every farmer from here to Lhasa. What do you know?"
The fox tilted its head. "What secret is that?" it asked, its voice suddenly uncertain.
Aku Tonpa sat down on a stone and looked at the fox with kind eyes. "The secret of kindness," he said. "A fox who knows every shortcut still gets cold at night. A fox who knows where every marmot hides still has no one to share the warmth of a fire. But a fox who is kind — that fox will never be alone."
The fox was very puzzled. It sat down and thought for a long time. The sun moved across the sky. The shadows of the mountains grew long. And still the fox sat thinking.
By sunset, the fox had not moved from the spot. Aku Tonpa had long since continued down the road, chuckling to himself. But the fox had learned more from that short conversation than in all its years of cunning.
It is said that from that day on, the fox began bringing small gifts of food to elderly villagers who lived alone. People marveled at the change. And whenever they asked the fox what had come over it, the fox would simply smile and say, "I met a very clever man on the mountain road."
